The Male Mental Mentality – Challenging Men’s Mental Health

With Mental Health Week around the corner I wanted to develop a new talk that spoke about issues that are at the core of my personal journey, the Male Mental Mentality.

Understanding that it’s ok to talk about our past and confront what we’ve been hiding from is a huge part of my personal journey. Reaching this understanding is especially hard when boys and men are constantly told to “boys don’t cry”; “you’re a man now”; “man up”; “grow some balls”; “don’t be a princess” and other things that negatively affect how we process things mentally.

It took me more than 20 years to talk about my issues. Feeling like I never fitted in anywhere. Struggling with my past. Trying to hide aspects of my life in fear of judgement. Not acknowledging how I felt.

It’s ok not to be ok. It’s ok to talk about it. It’s ok to be a man and show vulnerability.

A lived experience talk that discusses what it’s like being a maleĀ  living with mental health problems. While challenging notions of masculinity, Matt talks about his battles with mental health, the challenges he faced while addressing his past and how notions of what ‘being a man’ hindered his progress. Matt also explains the strategies he put in place to combat his own notions of masculinity and forge forward.
