The petrol poor and homelessness is now, unfortunately, a regular point I raise during my talks and workshops around homelessness. Recently I had an opportunity to provide our Libraries and Homelessness Professional Development Workshop to the staff at City of Perth Library. One of the things I always do it make sure the content is current. In this video I talk about recent petrol price hikes and the effects it’s having on those at risk of homelessness.

This graph is actually quite scary. So it’s the wage price index is basically inflation. So, the red is the price of inflation. The blue is wages. What you’re seeing is the cost of goods has dramatically risen. Petrol prices are through the roof. You’ve also probably seen people commenting on how expensive it was for a period of time to buy lettuce. I remember trying to buy it and it was like $6 and it’s ridiculous.
Because of the issue we’re finding people… as ridiculous as it sounds, are unable to afford to maintain employment, they’re unable to get to their place employment because of the cost of petrol, and the added cost of living. So they’re falling out of employment. And we’re seeing in the emergence of what they’re calling the petrol poor, and that is literally people that are on minimum wage that actually can’t afford to get to where they have their place of work.
And it’s very well to say, okay, well maybe they can catch public transport but if you’re unskilled labor working at an industrial area, that’s almost impossible. If you’re doing shift work, that’s impossible. So we’re finding poverty in a general sense, is increasing and that pushes a lot more people into that at risk [of homelessness] tier.
It’s also pushing a lot of people into homelessness. We’re effectively seeing is wages decreasing with the cost of living going up, and that’s pushing whole communities into homelessness.
