Introducing the Black Mask Book been over two years in the making, but it’s now more real than it has been before. As I’ve been writing the Black Mask Book, it’s become an integral part of my own recovery. I’m excited to say the Black Mask Book is due to be completed within the next few months.
When I first imagined the Black Mask Book, I wanted it to be a self help book for people, like me, who’re dealing with the after affects of domestic neglect, abuse and violence. Initially, I envisioned a book that laid out a plan to overcome these challenges. A step by step guide for overcoming one of the most silent hurdles in many people’s lives.
There was one problem with this idea, I’m still overcoming these challenges that accompany years of neglect, abuse and violence. And honestly, it feels like I’m only just coming to terms with how I was raised, what it entailed and how it continues to affect me.
I’ve found myself reassessing the whole idea of the Black Mask Book which I’ve struggled writing for 2 years. How can I write a self help book when I’m still on the journey of helping myself?
The answer was easier than I thought, the main point of the Black Mask Book has changed, at its core is an understanding that overcoming childhood neglect, abuse and violence is a long journey. One that requires constant self reflection and deep assessment of our past, present and futures. One that may, or may not have an end point. Experiencing such traumatic events throughout in my early developmental years has created a toxic web of repercussions, many of which I didn’t expect.
